Hi, my name is Jinin! I was born in Hong Kong, grew up in England, and came to Glasgow for my undergraduate studies. In 2016, I started volunteering as a mentor at the previous charity, then interned to develop the character education materials, and later worked behind the scenes as Administrator.

I firmly believe the significance of mentoring and role models in a child’s development. I remember my primary school teachers guiding me one-on-one as I learned English, and later my parents gave their time to tutor me throughout my academic studies. Without their support and other positive role models in my life, I would not have had the confidence to study at the university-level away from home. I acknowledge my privilege and also acknowledge that it is incredibly unfair that not everyone gets the same support. Therefore, I am honoured to have been able to volunteer and work to support children.

While working as Administrator, the favourite part of my work day was to listen to the delivery team about how their day went. I absolutely relish hearing the many stories of how the children and families have benefited from the work we have done. The work of WISE Mentoring is truly special, and that is why I am investing my time and energy into it — to offer children the opportunity to receive personal support and thrive in a safe environment.
